Gamal Mohamed Hassan, the Minister of Commerce and Industry of the Federal Government of Somalia, today participated in a ceremony marking the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Hormuud Telecom and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) of the Government of Germany, aimed at advancing Somalia’s digital economy.
The event focused on the importance of collaboration between the government, international organizations, and the private sector to accelerate the growth of the digital economy and the development of modern services in the country.
The agreement will play a key role in strengthening cooperation between the government and the private sector by promoting innovation, supporting the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and creating sustainable employment opportunities for Somali youth and the wider community.
Minister Gamal Mohamed Hassan welcomed the agreement, describing it as a significant step toward developing digital commerce and expanding both domestic and regional markets. He noted that the digital economy can play a major role in enhancing business competitiveness, increasing domestic production, and improving digital services in Somalia.
The Minister also emphasized the Federal Government of Somalia’s commitment to supporting policies and programs that promote technological innovation, digital investment, and private sector growth. He highlighted that such partnerships are essential for building a modern economy that aligns with global technological and commercial developments.
Representatives from Hormuud Telecom and GIZ also expressed their commitment to supporting the development of Somalia’s digital economy, emphasizing the importance of creating an enabling environment for startups, innovation, and the expansion of technology-driven services.
The agreement also strengthens the utilization of opportunities within the East African Community (EAC), promoting open trade, market integration, and shared economic growth that benefits the entire region.
This event is considered an important step toward advancing Somalia’s digital economy and strengthening cooperation between the government, private sector, and international partners to achieve sustainable economic growth and modern development.
