History of the Ministry

1960 - 1970

The Beginning

Following independence in 1960, Somalia established its early commercial and industrial institutions under the Somali Republic. During this period, trade and industry governance focused on building national economic foundations, regulating domestic commerce, and supporting early industrial activities as part of state-building efforts.

1970–1980

The Golden Age

Under the Supreme Revolutionary Council, Somalia adopted a state-led industrialisation model that expanded public-sector involvement in commerce and industry. This period saw structured industrial planning, stronger state enterprises, and centralised trade administration aimed at national economic transformation.

1990–2000

2000–2010

Rebuild

With the establishment of the Transitional Federal Government in 2004, commerce and industry institutions began gradual reconstruction. Core government functions were restored, policy frameworks reintroduced, and institutional coordination restarted to rebuild economic governance.

2010–Present

The Current Era

Following the formation of the Federal Government of Somalia in 2012 under the Provisional Constitution, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry consolidated responsibilities across commerce, industry, cooperatives, and state-owned enterprise supervision. The 2026 organogram amendment, approved by the Prime Minister, formalised the Ministry’s current 8-Department and 5-Unit structure.
