1st, September 2024 (Mogadishu) – Mr. Mohamed Saney Dalmar, the Director General of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Federal Government of Somalia, officially inaugurated a three-day stakeholder consultation meeting aimed at developing Somalia’s Rules of Origin Law. This important assembly is designed to create a legal framework that will establish criteria for preferential trade treatment and promote the “Made in Somalia” label, thereby enhancing the country’s access to regional and global markets.
During his opening remarks, Director General Dalmar emphasized the law’s critical role in overcoming current trade challenges and fostering economic growth within Somalia. “This legislation is vital not just for our nation but for regional integration. It will position our products where they rightfully belong in the global market,” he stated.
The consultation meeting brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, and trade experts, Their collective expertise and contributions will be invaluable in shaping a law that adequately reflects the needs and aspirations of the Somali business community.
Director General Mr. Dalmar extended his gratitude to the World Bank Group for their ongoing support through the Drive Project, which has been instrumental in facilitating this initiative. He also acknowledged the contributions of Laasfort Consulting Group and the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) for their assistance in developing the upcoming legislation.
The Director General encouraged participants to actively engage in the discussions over the next three days. “Your insights will be crucial as we craft this law, and I urge you all to contribute your knowledge and experience to ensure its success,” he said.
The Rules of Origin Law aims to provide clear guidelines that define Somalian products, making it easier for local manufacturers to compete in the global arena. By establishing a recognized “Made in Somalia” designation, the law will not only enhance trade advantages but also promote national pride in Somali-made goods.
